Welcome to Personal Development and Career Planning!
This course is intended to help students with Personal Development, Lifelong Learning, and Career Exploration and Planning. Personal Development “involves outcomes which enable the learner to explore his or her specific personality traits and skills, take personal responsibility for his or her behaviour, develop positive self-esteem, and learn how to interact effectively with others. Lifelong learning helps learners understand their unique learning style, develop lifelong learning and time management skills, and assume personal responsibility and self-motivation. Career Exploration and Planning helps students translate personal traits and skills into occupational terms and blend their work role with other life roles to develop a healthy lifestyle. Students learn to engage in career planning, using goal-setting and problem-solving strategies.”
This is a mandatory course and a passing grade is needed in order to graduate from high school. Therefore, it is important for all students to apply themselves at all times and seek extra help when needed. Like most classes, assessment and evaluation are based on the usual: quizzes, writing assignments, presentations, independent work, group work, and test. Since instructional time is vital to a successful year, a portion of the grade is based on attendance, preparedness, participation, homework and behaviour. This is designed to encourage students to “put their best foot forward.” Keep in mind that students are required to keep their work up-to-date. If they miss time, it is their responsibility to get the notes/work they missed from another student in the class. Late assignments will be penalized.
The textbook is, “The Seven Habits for Highly Effective Teens”. The replacement cost for this text is $15. Some of the topics to be covered are as follows: Principles and Values, Relationships, Dating Violence, Time Management, Resume writing, Suicide Awareness, Leadership etc.
Extra help is available at noon hours. Each student must make prior arrangements with the teacher beforehand. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at the school via email or telephone. I look forward to working with each and every student and with the parent/guardian support!
